Planned Ignore
You’ve heard of it, you’ve probably even used it… the Planned Ignore.
Planned ignores are a great tool to use with behavioral challenges! While they may sound intimidating at first, there’s no reason to be afraid of using them in your classes. Check out today’s video for some tips on using a planned ignore and advice on how to ensure everyone, including parents, is on the same page.

The Power of a Planned Ignore
The psychology behind a planned ignore is this: Behaviors that you give attention to will increase and behavior that you don’t give attention to will decrease. The perfect time to use a planned ignore is when a child has escalated to a point where they’re not compliant no matter what you say or do, and you can’t calm them down. Basically, they need to be left alone. Now, keep in mind that you need to make sure the student is safe and you’re not actually ignoring the child. Planned ignores are not intended for dangerous behavior. However, we need to give them time to understand and learn how to self-regulate and self-soothe. Then, give them praise and positive reinforcement when they come back to class. This helps the child learn that self-regulating and coming back to participate in class when they’re calm is what we want them to do.

Let the Caregiver Know About the Planned Ignore
We always want to let the student’s caregiver know when we’re going to try this strategy. Simply explaining what a planned ignore is and why you’re trying it will help ease any concerns the caregiver may have. Having clear communication with everyone involved is key to success.
